Under the New South Wales's Solar Bonus Scheme and the Australian Capital Territory's Feed-In Tariff Scheme energy retailers are now required to pay households and small businesses for all electricity generated by their solar systems.

In coastal NSW and the ACT a 1.5 KW solar system will produce a minimum of 2100 kilowatt hours of electricity per annum.

Under the gross feed-in tariff schemes, the expected annual income return on a 1.5kW installation is $1,260 in coastal NSW or $1,060 in the ACT.

Over the lifetime of the gross feed-in tariff programmes, this equates to cumulative returns of $7,560 by 2016 in NSW and $20,150 by 2029 in the ACT.
